Kierstin's Sunday "dress"

This happened a couple weeks ago but there was no camera cord so it's getting posted now. :) It was Sunday morning and I was scrambling to get 6 people dressed and ready to go. Now that Landin is 12 and has been passing the Sacrament he's been wearing a white shirt and tie to church without fail (and usually without complaint). I told Kierstin to get dressed for church. This is what she came back with....
The tie is left over from infant brothers but actually fit her. She actually had a white shirt of her own. Unfortunately, the shorts were cotton/poly....and umm....shorts. I made her put on a skirt instead but let her wear the rest to church. I was very amused. :)

Pictures from Christmas

So today we cleaned...and cleaned...and cleaned. Guess what was found...the cord for the camera. We are now fully downloaded, recharged and cord stowed in a more secure (and findable) location. Here are the pics I couldn't download before...

Landin actually went to his room and brought his presents back into the living room for me to take his picture. I'm shocked....no comments at all! :)
One of those games Brydin is holding is also Landin's but it didn't matter enough to make sure it was in Landin's picture too. :)

Kierstin loved the new Sunday dress from Grandma. When she opened it she said, "A new dress! I've never had one before!" Umm....what have you been wearing to church for the last 6 years baby girl? :) Yes, she has way more stuff than the boys but let's face it....they want expensive stuff and of her stuff was under $5. Same amount spent...looks way cooler in a picture. :)

I'm shocked Jaydin actually sat still for the picture. I don't remember what there were two of but he was intent on making sure I knew that. Maybe he's getting an early start for flashing the peace sign.

Kierstin told me a month or so ago that she wanted to learn to sew so she got this little kit that has 5 different projects in it. It teaches them to do three-four different sewing techniques including needlepoint and cross-stitch, mostly with plastic canvas. However, this project involved sewing together a little bear and stuffing him. I'll take a picture of her with the finished product. It turned out pretty cute and she loved it!

11th and 12th days of Christmas

Our last 2 installments of 12 Days of Christmas were 11 pieces of fudge with pecans and today we got a pack of candy canes. The kids love treats so of course it was a hit. :) Thanks to those who selected us to have fun with them this year!

Merry Christmas!

We had a good morning this morning! Yea! No major fights or arguments. Whew! We even got to sleep in until 7 this morning! Holy Cow! The big boys were already awake but nicely followed directions and stayed in their rooms. It didn't take much to wake up Kierstin. We knew better to wake up Jaydin so he slept until he was ready to be awake.

Billy had himself some extra fun. He had helped wrapped some of the gifts and had nicely wrapped Jaydin's preschool computer game and labeled it as being for Landin (12). Then he took Landin's very much wanted Weird Al CD and labeled it as being for Jaydin. So since Jaydin was not awake while the rest of the kids were opening gifts Landin opened the preschool game and when the rest of his presents were opened he didn't have the one thing he had really really wanted. I was panicking because I didn't know Billy had played that trick and thought I had lost one of Landin's gifts. It was all fine when Jaydin woke up and the Weird Al CD was discovered. Whew!

Jaydin had a blast opening gifts. He either shrieked the name of the gift or AWESOME! Every time he opened something. It was very cute.

I did take pictures but I don't know where the cord to the camera is. As soon as I find it I will post the pictures I took. :)

I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!

Track Santa's sleigh!

December 24 2 am MT through December 25 3 am MT you can call 1-877-HI-NORAD and find out where Santa is. You can also go to www.noradsanta.org and see Santa's progress via radar. How fun! :)

The 10th/9th Day of Christmas

Tonight we got 9 homemade, hand decorated sugar cookies...and a cute note apologizing for being out of order. :) The kids were totally excited about the cookies...of course. :) Kudos for coming out in the rain tonight.

Christmas Days updates and a busy weekend

Sorry for the lapse in updates...I've had "complaints". LOL! Sorry Amber! So on the 6th day we got 6 microwave popcorn bags and 6 cans of root beer. On the 7th day we got 7 chocolate covered pretzel rods (mommy got 2 yummy!). On the 8th day we got one of those Livesavers books with 8 rolls of candy. Tonight we got....Phase 10. The kids love that game and the cards seem to always go missing so we actually needed a new set. :) The kids are in heaven. :)

So this weekend...the stake's dry pack canner got put to some good use. For those not in my stake...about a year or two ago the stake Relief Society bought a machine that seals the #10 cans. Last year I bought a pallet of empty #10 cans (about 500). We've made some runs to the church cannery for the ward but hadn't really used a whole bunch of them. Well...a week or two ago we got a dispersement from Billy's school and went shopping at Sam's Club. We had a ton of food but here in this town there is an excess of bugs. This means it can't stay in the original packaging or it will be nasty when we want to eat it. Luckily the stake RS president is in our ward and doesn't live far so I borrowed the canner. We canned beans, rice, pasta, oatmeal, sugar, salt, pepper, garlic powder, baking soda, corn starch, feminine products...whew! In case of emergency...come to our house! We're stocked. In case you were wondering...you can fit a month's worth of feminine products in one #10 can and have an assortment of things. We also put a couple of card games and bandages in one. Who knows? Maybe we'll have a flood. LOL! Anyway...we just wanted to be able to use it instead of paying for it and then getting bugs....and Billy wants the cans used up. :) It took hours to do all of that but our food storage looks pretty good.

On the Fifth Day of Christmas

Five pieces of a little village. Very cute! :) It will be at least 2 years before it will be on display. It is breakable. Jaydin doesn't leave things alone. LOL!

On the Fourth Day of Christmas....

Four things to color....individually wrapped and addressed to a specific child (all spelled correctly I might add, quite a feat). Jaydin was already asleep so he hasn't opened his yet but Kierstin was ecstatic over her color book and crayons and the older boys thought the race car felt/velvet color posters were pretty cool. I've thought about buying those before and just never did. I'm interested to see how they turn out. :)

On the 3rd Day of Christmas....

The guys came home from from scouts to a little box. In it? Two kitchen towels and a potholder. All three winter festive causing Jaydin (3) to call out Frosty the Snowman! Potholders in our house are a rare commodity...they always seem to disappear at the most inconvenient times. Why kids would take potholders to play with is beyond me. Another is always appreciated. :)

12 Days of Christmas...How fun!

It seems that we have been selected as the recipients of the 12 Days of Christmas from someone. The kids are so excited they can't even stand it. :) On Monday, Landin and I returned home from his band concert to find a candle and an article about the 12 Days of Christmas and the symbolism behind it. It was very interesting. I'll put it at the bottom of this post. The candle has been burning if I am awake and at home. It smells amazing! Last night was very cute too. They gave us 2 Christmas Tree-shaped Magna Doodles, one for Kierstin and one for Jaydin.

If our benefactors happen to be among the few who read my blog...THANK YOU! It is always fun to do stuff like this. I'm grateful that someone thought of us for this year. Also, a friendly warning. Even beginning yesterday Landin wanted to watch out his bedroom window to catch the person in the act. His room is the only one in the front (on the Avenue N side of the house). If you want to maintain your secrecy I recommend approaching the porch from the other side. :) I'll do my best to keep kids out of the kitchen window but I work late Thursday and Friday and no guarantees that Billy will. LOL.

Anyway...here is the article by David Crowder called "'12 Days of Christmas' is no nonsense, but a serious riddle"

It is Christmastime, a time to give, a time to receive, a time of celebration and a time of caroling.

And among the songs we have sung over and over again and eventually memorized, though not easily, is "The 12 Days of Christmas."

The melody is wonderful but the words are mystery, even to many longtime Roman Catholics for whom it was written in the first place.

What may seem a children's song of silly riddles and repetition like "Old McDonald Had a Farm" once had a very serious purpose in times that were, for Roman Catholics, very serious.

After Henry VIII of England broke with the Pope of Rome and the Roman Catholic Church in 1533, the church was banned. Its vast property holdings were taken away and distributed among the royal families in return for their loyalty, its churches and monasteries were destroyed and from 1558 until 1829, its adherents were forbidden from practicing their religion.

But Catholicism survived despite the persecution, and somewhere along the line, someone wrote this innocent-sounding carol to help preserve it.

The song was, in fact, a coded message young Catholics were taught, which embodied some of the basic tenets of their faith -- a catechism lesson of sorts.

And this is what it really meant:

"On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me a partridge in a pear tree," the song begins.

The "true love" referred to the father God and the partridge in a pear tree to Jesus Christ upon the cross.

"On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, two turtle doves," referred to the Old and New Testaments.

The third gift, three French hens stood for faith, hope and charity or love.

The four calling birds were the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Five golden rings represented the five scrolls of the Jewish Torah or Law, which are the first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.

Six geese a-laying? Simple, the six days of creation.

The seven swans a-swimming stood for the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord.

Eight maids a-milking reminded children of the eight beatitudes listed in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5), beginning with "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God." Jesus went on to bless those who mourn, who are meek, who hunger and thirst after righteousness, who are merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers and who are persecuted for their righteousness.

The nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.

Ten lords a-leaping was the code for the Ten Commandments.

The 11 pipers piping referred to the 11 faithful apostles.

And, at last, "On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, 12 drummers drumming."

They recalled the 12 points of belief expressed in the Apostles' Creed: the belief in God the father, the son and the holy spirit, that Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary, made man, crucified, died and arose on the third day, that he sits at the right had of the father and will come again, the resurrection of the dead and life everlasting.

May this give new meaning to "The 12 Days of Christmas," and may Christmas mean something new to you this year.

Teaching Moment from Big Sis

Billy took the big boys off today and I stayed home with the little ones. Kierstin (6) and Jaydin (3) were playing very nicely together. Yesterday ended Red Ribbon week in our school district and Kierstin has been wearing the red bracelet associated with it all week. She decided to take it off today and Jaydin wanted to see it. She told him that the bracelet said "Don't do drugs". She then continued...."Let me tell you something about doing drugs. It takes away part of your brain." He didn't respond the way she thought he should (I believe his response was "AWESOME!" Hey..he's 3.). She pulled out the bracelet again and said "Let me tell you what this says. 'Don't do drugs. It takes away part of your brain and makes you stupid.' That last part is in invisible letters."

Oh no! It's starting already!

So I asked Kierstin if she was good at school today. She told me...."Well....I kissed Clay on the lips." Apparently she got in trouble and they told her they were calling home. Billy didn't get a call and there was no message so they must have been trying to get her to realize it was a big deal and to not do it anymore. I made a big deal about how gross kissing boys is and that boys have germs....don't share cups and don't kiss boys. She's 6! Oh boy. I suppose I should be glad that she didn't get suspended for sexual harassment like that 6-year-old little boy a few years back. He kissed someone on the cheek. My daughter went straight for the lips.

When I told her it wasn't good to kiss boys she quickly countered that I kiss Daddy. I told her she could kiss a boy when she was married. Do you think that will at least last long enough for her to hit a double digit age? Sigh....it's starting already. I'm in for a long road I think. LOL!

Flying Robots, Ninjas and a cool Christmas Project

Jaydin has taken to pretending he's a robot. This usually consists of him walking around stiffly saying "Robot" over and over again in his best mechanical voice. Today he decided that his little robot self could fly and ran around in circles saying "Robot". This game kept him busy for a good 15 minutes. I think the previously ingested cookies might have had something to do with it. :) Landin had a clever way of keeping his brother at a slight distance without hurting his feelings. He told Jaydin that he was a ninja. Jaydin decided that robots stay away from ninjas and kept his small circle at an acceptable distance from where Landin was relaxing. Smart big brother. :)

Billy has started work on our family Christmas present. It's going to be really cool! He's going to make a game table. It will be like a coffee table with different panels. The panels will each have a board game on it. We're trying to brainstorm which games to put on it. Any ideas? We're trying to think of generic games that won't have copyright issues. :) We've thought of checkers/chess, parcheesi, and backgammon. Anything else come to mind?

13 years already?

Billy and I just celebrated our 13th anniversary. I can't believe it has been that long already! How the time flies! I never would have dreamed that we'd end up going the places we've been or that I'd have the kind of job I do. I wonder where the next 13 years will take us.

It's me! Jay Jay!

So the cutest thing has been happening the past couple of days. Kierstin just finished a Girl Scout Day camp where the theme was the Lion King. They made the kids little costumes to demonstrate their little groups. Kierstin was an elephant and I was helping with an older group and got to be a monkey. The costumes consisted of a headband with ears attached and a tail. I didn't have the tail but got my own ears. I brought them home and promptly gave them to the kids. Jaydin (2) had a blast playing with them. He put them on and made monkey noises. He started chasing Landin (12) and having great fun. Landin was nice and played along. He pretended to be terrified of the mean monkey who wanted to eat him. He ran and pretended to hide by covering his face with a pillow. Jaydin thought this was hilarious but when Landin wouldn't come out he felt the need to reassure him. He was still laughing but still kept trying to get Landin to come out of hiding. He pulled on the pillow and said "I not a monkey. It's me, Jay Jay." He kept saying it over and over again. It was so cute! I've never heard him call himself by name. I was very amused that when he did he chose the nickname Kierstin gave him. It's amusing because Billy doesn't like that nickname. His initials aren't JJ, they are JW so we shouldn't call him Jay Jay. Joke's on you now....he's calling himself Jay Jay. I love it! Jay Jay is way cuter than JW anyway. :)

Apple Soup?

Jaydin is 2 1/2 now. Along with his development he has finally decided that he wants to talk. However, since he was stubborn and refused to speak for so long, many of his words are still hard to understand or he uses the wrong words to say what he wants. For example, we had tomato soup the other day for dinner. He loved it. He asked me for more by saying "Apple Soup?" and lifting his bowl. I tried to correct him so that he would attempt to say the correct word. Nope, even today....2 weeks later....he still asks for apple soup. However, today he asked for apple soup and pointed at the alphabet pasta. That may be his new term for soup in general.

Imagination still at work

Kierstin and Jaydin decided to watch a movie today. I decided to make everyone happy and let the older boys play video games on the big TV in the living room and brought the little ones in the bedroom with me to watch their movie. I had been doing laundry earlier in the day so the laundry basket was on my bed. Both kids immediately climbed in and sat down. Kierstin began telling Jaydin that they were at a drive-in movie theater and the basket was their car. I was amused that she had thought of it and amazed she even knew what a drive-in was. I was even more shocked when both kids sat there calmly for most of the movie!

Amusing Kid Story

Yesterday my daughter came into my room sniffling so I asked her what was wrong. She told me sniffling the whole time that when she goes to Sea World (at the end of July mind you), she is really going to miss Landin. Still sniffling, she continues to tell me that she will really miss him because he is the only one who is nice to her. I told her to go and give Landin a hug so that she would feel better. Her response...."I can't, he won't let me in his room." Hmmm...... I got a good chuckle out of that one.

Watermelon and statistics

Who would have thought something so simple would have such a huge impact? Billy's birthday was this week. Since we are temporarily broke we went to the grocery store and bought some things to make a simple birthday dinner rather than the traditional dinner date. He saw some enormous watermelons. Not the tiny flavor-reduced seedless ones but the original watermelons. We brought one home and the kids went crazy! That one melon has kept them happy for a couple of days now. I'll have to remember that....happy kids for several days for about $7. I can afford that one! Of course, it has gotten hot the past few days and our central air unit decided to go out this week. However, I think they would have been happy even if they hadn't been a little hotter than normal. :) Sometimes it is the little things that make the biggest difference.

I'm 2 days away from finishing my statistics class. Last week was tough but I'm happy to say that when I did my math today I discovered that it was the same concepts as last week applied differently and I knew what I was doing. I suppose that means I understood the material. Whew! Another Master's class under my belt....7 more to go. If I stay on track I'll finish in July or August 2010. Yea!!!! I'm finally seeing progress so I think I should be able to move ahead with no more breaks. Whew!

Girl Scout Swim Party

So Kierstin had a swim party for Girl Scouts this past week. I had to work a little later so I had a friend, Brandy, pick her up to take her. Brandy stopped by on her way home from work to get her and was greeted at the door by a big brother who proceeded to tell her that Kierstin didn't have anywhere to go today and wasn't going swimming. Brandy told him that she had talked to me and I knew she was picking Kierstin up and to get her dressed in her swimming suit and she would stop back to pick her up. Brandy then called me to find out what was going on. I had already talked to Billy about it and knew that he knew so I was confused. Brandy came back 15 or so minutes later only to be greeted by the same brother. He sent Kierstin out in a night gown with no shoes. (For the record...this is NOT what she was wearing when I left for work at noon.) Brandy sent Kierstin back for some shoes. She then asked if Kierstin had anything on underneath that night gown. Nope! Oh brother! Brandy told Brydin to get Kierstin's swimming suit because she couldn't get in the pool like that. Brydin tried to tell her that that Kierstin didn't have a swimming suit...(what? she's always wearing her swimming suit?!). Brandy told him that she knew Kierstin had one because Kierstin had attended her daughter's swim party the week before. About that time Billy came out with Kierstin's swimming suit, not knowing that anyone had come to pick her up. Brydin got in trouble for sending his sister out with someone without telling his dad she had been picked up.

Now she is dressed and on her way to the swim party in a swimming suit and cowboy boots. However, the story doesn't end there. I got off work and drove straight to the pool to join up with the crowd. I was greeted by a fellow Girl Scout troop leader who said they were all laughing at Kierstin's booties. I made some kind of polite comment in return and went on slightly confused. I got to where Brandy was sitting and saw Kierstin's boots there. I figured that was what she had been talking about since Kierstin is never without her boots. Then my daughter climbed out of the pool to greet me. Her swimming suit was about 3 sizes too small. The woman who had greeted me had been telling me they were laughing about her "boobies". Oh brother! Why didn't she get a shirt to wear over the top of her small suit? Sigh....This weekend we'll be shopping for a new suit I suppose. Luckily there were only girl scouts at the pool at that time. However, no pictures will be posted (nor were they taken) for the sake of the poor child's modesty.

Some things just don't go quite right when Mom isn't around to take care of them.

Easter at our house

I'm a little late posting pictures but I lost the cord to the camera until today. Now I'm back in action with the digital camera. :)

The big boys hid the eggs for the little kids. They all had fun but the big boys were kinda disappointed when they realized I hadn't hidden a second set of eggs for them to find. Oh well...I'll know for next year. They had fun getting Jaydin to pick up the eggs that he found. He didn't quite get it. Of course, that could have something to do with the fact that I drug him outside the second he woke up. :) I was excited and trying to still get everyone to church on time.

Here are the pictures with the basket. The Easter Bunny brought one basket with presents and candy for everyone. The kids thought it was cool.

Jaydin's got wine!?

Yes, those are the words that I heard today from my 11-year-old. He kept insisting that his 2-year-old brother had wine. I knew I didn't have any in the house and didn't understand what he was talking about. Landin took the offending substance from his brother and brought it to me...lemon extract. He saw on the ingredients list that there is alcohol in it and went straight to "Jaydin's got wine." I wonder how upset he would be to discover that all of the extracts in our pantry

Unusual Surprise at the Doctor's Office

No...I'm not pregnant! :) Kierstin's had a fever for several days so I took her to the doctor today to see why her fever wouldn't go away. He listened to her symptoms and gave a preliminary diagnosis. He then proceeded to check in all the places that doctors usually check. He looked in her ears and then said something about there being a green pea in there and left the room. It didn't really register what he said until he came back with some little tools. She had something stuck in her ear canal. He had me hold his little light thing so he could carefully dig in there. I looked in there and sure enough...there was something in there. However, it was the wrong shade to be a pea. Trust me, I have 5 billion stored up from my time on WIC. :) I suggested that it was a BB from an AirSoft BB gun. The doctor tried to get the stupid thing out, Kierstin crying every time he tried. He finally had to get one of the other doctors to come and help him. The other doctor brought some other little tools and just went at it while our doctor helped hold her. Kierstin screamed but they got it out. Mom was right...a BB. I think Kierstin's ordeal traumatized the doctor more than it did Kierstin. :) The poor man apologized to me about 10 times, gave Kierstin 2 stickers and a book, then apologized 4 more times. :) He is an excellent pediatrician and has such a tender heart. I was fine, I knew it had to come out and that they weren't seriously hurting her. She just didn't like it and it was uncomfortable. :)

The good news is that she's fine and will be able to be at school again tomorrow with no issues. She's not even acting sick anymore. :) The BB and her fever aren't related...just convenient. :) I took her out to lunch and signed her up for some fun Girl Scout activities. She's been compensated for her trauma and now knows not to put anything in her ears (and don't let her brothers either). :)

What goes through their minds?

So Sacrament meeting was fun today. One of the guys Billy works with had minor surgery last week so Billy had to work today in his place. That meant I got to spend Sacrament meeting alone fighting 4 kids into some form of reverance. Things start off fine. The older boys are entertaining themselves with that game where you draw a grid of dots and see who can make the most squares. Kierstin is letting me read her the Friend articles and Jaydin is sitting half paying attention to his brothers and half to the stories. One of the boys starts cheating and so they start fighting, resulting in their game being taken away. They sit sulking and glaring at each other and I go back to the story. Then, out of nowhere, a paper airplane flies by my face! I was horrified! I had seen Landin with a new piece of paper but stopped really paying attention to him. He's 11 and I figured he would be somewhat okay with a piece of paper. Yeah, right. :) Luckily, it stayed in our bench and didn't disrupt the entire meeting. Why is it that the 5 and 2-year olds are easier to deal with in Sacrament meeting than the 10 and 11-year olds? They should be able to calmly sit and play their dot game or read the Friend without fighting for 1 hour. The babies can! Sigh....... :)

Girl Scout Cookies anyone?

My daughter is a Daisy Girl Scout this year. She is having a blast. This is the first year we've done it and so we're new cookie sellers. Her goal is to sell about 600 boxes of cookies so that she can go on the troop trip this summer. Let me know if you want any! :) They are $3.50 per box. LOL!
